[입트영] 2월 5일 - Riddles (수수께끼)

 

 

EBS 입이 트이는 영어 2월 5일 주제는 'Riddles (수수께끼)'입니다.  pun (말장난, 언어유희), wordplay (말장난, 재담)인 수수께끼는 아재개그 (dad joke)와 한 끗 차이라는 표현이 매우 인상적입니다.

Our eldest child, a grade-schooler, loves asking and solving riddles. 

초등학생인 우리 집 큰 아이는 수수께끼 문제를 맞히는 것을 무척 좋아합니다.

One day, he brought home a riddle he learned from his friends and posed it to me. 

하루는 친구들에게 배워 온 수수께끼를 저에게 냈습니다.

"Mom, What's the smartest bird in the world?  The answer is Har-bird."

"엄마, 세상에서 제일 똑똑한 새는? 정답은 하버드."

 

 

I found it very amusing because it came from my son. 

아들이 낸 문제라서 그런지 저는 무척 재미있었습니다.

amusing = interesting and amazing amd entertaining

 

 

To encourage my son's interest in riddles, I bought him a book of riddles.

수수께끼에 푹 빠진 아들을 위해서 저는 수수께끼 책을 한 권 사 주었습니다.

As he read the book, he started asking his dad riddles. 

아들은 책을 읽다가 아빠에게 문제를 내기 시작했습니다. 

 

 

Some of the questions seemed quite challenging to me, but my husband got them right almost immediately. 

제가 느끼기에는 제법 어려운 문제들도 있었는데, 남편은 문제를 풀자마자 답을 맞혔습니다.

While answering our son's riddles, my husband sometime asked riddles of his own, emphasizing the point that he had made them up on the spot. 

아들의 수수께끼에 대답하던 남편은 본인이 즉석에서 만든 문제라고 강조하며 수수께끼를 내기도 했습니다.

Hearing them, I realized that there's a fine line between riddles and dad jokes.
